Breaking

by Daniel Beadle - Monday, October 19, 2009

Graham stands in front of the dormitory, watching the college students walk by. The sunlight is fading, along with the summer warmth. Graham keeps his head low, in his instinctively shy demeanor. But eyes catch sight of something remarkable. A girl in a white dress, softly billowing in the warm breeze. Her eyes star back at him, with a look of quiet elation. Graham smiles as she runs toward him. The couple embraces, and Graham lifts Jennifer into the air. She giggles, and he lowers her back to the ground as they kiss. “I missed you,” she whispers.

Graham looks into her eyes. “I’m sorry it’s been so long,” he starts. “But we have all weekend together.”

Graham catches a look of apprehension in Jennifer’s eyes. “Of course,” she responds.

The couple kiss once more, but something is lost. Graham notices her reservation, and when she pulls away too soon, he feels a foreboding wave wash over him.

“Come on. Let’s go inside.”

Graham looks at the darkening sky and feels an autumn chill in the air.

“…I figured it out now... Breaking’s what the heart is for.”
