First Kiss

by Daniel Beadle - Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Jennifer and Graham walk together along the paved trail, silhouetted by the streetlamp just behind them. The light drizzle of rain begins to pick up.

“That’s ridiculous. Twelve hours?” says Graham.

“Twelve hours just for those stupid tickets. I swore I’d never camp out for tickets again.”

“Jeeze, I wouldn’t camp out… if I was camping.” The two share a laugh that is cut short as the rain picks up.

“We really need to get inside.”

“C’mon.” Graham grabs her hand and runs with her in tow toward the building ahead of them. They arrive at the front entrance and stand under the overhang. “Well, this is me. You can cut through to get to your room. It should keep you just a little bit dryer.”

Jennifer laughs, and Graham joins in when he realizes that both of them are soaked to the bone. The laugh trails off, and there’s a lingering pause.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Jennifer walks down the front steps, starts walking down the adjacent sidewalk. Graham looks at the door, and then looks back at Jennifer.

Jennifer slows her walk, and then turns around. Graham lightly jogs down the front steps, and comes face to face with Jennifer. She begins to speak, as Graham takes a step toward her. She instinctively wraps her arms around him, and the two share a kiss that silences the world around them.

A near infinity later, their lips part, and the two look at each other, as if for the first time. Graham kisses her forehead, and holds her close.
